South Asians in Government

Zohran Mamdani

He was born in Kampala, Uganda, in 1991 to Indian parents. At the age of seven years old Mamdani moved to New York City. He started off his political career in the New York State Assembly, where he was elected in 2020 to represent parts of Queens. Mamdani made history by becoming the first South Asian and Muslim elected mayor of New York City in November 2025. On January 1st 2026 he officially took office at the age of 34 becoming the city's youngest mayor in more than a century.  Mamdani's election marked a historic moment for South Asian representation in American politics. As the son of Indian immigrants who grew up in New York, his journey reflects the growing role of immigrant communities in shaping American political leadership. His election also brought an increase in visibility to South Asian Americans in one of the country's largest and most diverse cities.

Dalip Singh Saund

He was born in Punjab, India. Dalip Singh Saund immigrated to the United States in 1919 and eventually settled in California. In 1956, he was elected to the US  House of Representatives, making him the first person of Asian descent elected to Congress with full voting rights. He represented a Southern California district from 1957 to 1963. Before Congress, he was also a farmer and a judge in California's Imperial Valley. What makes his story especially interesting for your blog is that Asian immigrants like Saund had previously faced laws restricting their ability to become U.S. citizens. Saund himself became a citizen in 1949, only several years before being elected to Congress.

Nikki Haley

She was born in South Carolina in 1972 to Indian immigrant parents from Punjab, Nikki Haley made history as the first Indian American woman to serve in a U.S presidential Cabinet level position. However, before reaching the national stage in her political career she started off in the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2005. Then 5 years later she became the first woman and first Indian American who was elected governor of South Carolina.

In 2017, President Donald Trump appointed Haley as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, where she represented American interests and participated in international discussions on security, human rights, and foreign policy. Haley's achievements marked an important milestone for South Asian representation in American politics. As the daughter of Indian immigrants, her journey from South Carolina to a Cabinet level position demonstrated the growing presence of South Asian Americans in government.
