South Asians in Medicine & Health

Dr.  Vivek Murthy

In 2014, Dr. Vivek Murthy made history by becoming the first Indian American to serve as Surgeon General of the United States. He was born in England and then moved to Florida. He was always very passionate about medicine and helping others which influenced his studies. He studied at Harvard University and then got his medical degree from Yale University. As Surgeon general, he was determined to improve public health as well as raising awareness on mental health, loneliness, and addiction.  From 2014 to 2017 he served as Surgeon General and then again from 2021 to 2025 which makes his influence even more dominant because he isone of the few individuals to hold the position under two different presidential administrations. His achievements marked a major achievement for the South Asian community in America, demonstrating their growing representation and leadership in the American healthcare system.

Dr. Anandibai Joshi

Dr. Anandbai Joshi made history in 1886 by becoming the first Indian woman to earn a medical degree in the Unite States. In 1865, she was born in India and from a  young age she always wanted to pursue a career in medicine. However, during this time period women faced many barriers when it came to education and professional careers. In 1883 she moved to America to attend the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. 3 years later earned her medical degree and wanted to advance the medical care in India. Therefore, she went back to India and was appointed a medical position. Sadly, she passed away in 1887 and despite her short life she broke boundaries not only for women but for South Asian women in the United States.
